The Fling

The Highland Fling

This is the oldest of the traditional dances of Scotland and was a dance of joy performed at the end of a victorious battle.

It was danced by male warriors over a small round shield, called a Targe warriors carried into battle.

Most Targes had a sharp spike of steel projecting from the centre, so dancers learned early to move with great skill and dexterity.

The Highland Fling is danced on the spot, and is said to be based on the antics of a stag on a hillside; the grouped fingers and upheld arms representing the antlers.

You can rest assured that you won't be asked to do the fling on the afternoon of the 23rd of January.

Tickets bought in advance at the Larruperz Centre or the Age Concern Office in Broad Street will guarantee a taste of haggis. On the door and we hope to have enough.

The word céilidh ("kay-lee") is Scottish Gaelic for 'visit', denoting the event's origin as an informal, home gathering with much dancing.

You won’t be dancing as the Larruperz Centre will be set up for an evening theatre performance which is useful for our purposes.

There will be 250 seats so tell your friends! Anyone can tell a story, sing a song or whatever. This dates from the days when people made their own entertainment.

Those were the days!

We've changed as new value systems have altered society.

But that doesn't mean you will be asked to get up and do the fling or anything at all!

When you come along, you will experience all on this list and more, and raise money for a worthy cause.

YOU WILL:

Hear legends of the origins of the Scottish flag and the thistle as emblem.

Hear some of the poems written by Rabbie Burns and learn how certain phrases in everyday speech have been imported from Scotland. Sing some auld sangs of Scotland.

Learn about the life and times of Robert Burns.

Hear the Bagpipe and learn how it works.

Learn why Scotsmen carry a Sgian-dhu in one sock.

Sing along with well-kenned tunes like Mairi’s Wedding, and Over the Sea to Skye

Hear the original “God Save Our Gracious King”. It was controversial in the 1800s.

Have the chance to entertain all present. Even if you only bring a comb and toilet paper to render “Scotland the Brave”, it will bring the hoose doon!

Taste the haggis and say "slangiva" after its ‘despatch’ with a Sgian-dhu - the knife in the sock. "Slangiva" is a corrupted form of the Gaelic slainte-mhath which means - good health. You can just say - slainte,

If you bring two plastic knives, you can place them in front of your seat. Then you will be taught the "Sit-doon Sword Dance"!

All this heralds an Age Concern Burns Dinner to be held at the Ryefield Centre on January 31, 7pm for 7.30.

It is an event for all in the community around Ross to enjoy and contribute in various ways.
